Description of the research topic:
Candidates are expected to carry out research about existing collaborations and creative interactions between specific performers, music scenes, geographically integrated music industries, or the synergies between genres of popular music and tele-cinematic genres (including music videos, musicals, music biographies, concert films, television advertising for festivals and other popular music related events). Depending on the nature of interaction (joint projects and appearances, musicking, music networking; imitation, borrowing, translation, glocalization) candidates are expected to offer both a cultural and musicological account of their chosen topic. Ideally, these should be case studies of how oriental and folk music is appropriated by well-established genres, how it is presented at international popular music festivals, or, just the opposite, how western trends affect local music initiatives, reconfigure local context of production and consumption. As for the interaction of popular music and cinema, candidates are advised to propose under-researched topics be that aesthetically innovative/experimental music videos, the affinity of these to feature local culture or portray non-conventional identities.
