Description of the research topic:

Using artificial arterio-venous (AV) shunts has an importance in providing vascular access for hemodialysis. However, due to the possible complications, location and geometry related to flow conditions still have to be optimized. Concerning the effect on hemodynamics and perfusion of affected regions/organs several question remains unanswered. In that aspect, modelling of arterio-venous malformations (AVM) has a connection point to the topic. Based on microsurgical techniques AV shunts and AVM models (e.g., preformed vascularized scaffold implantation or AV shunt series at definitive locations) will be performed in rats. After the necessary maturation period, hemodynamic, microcirculatory, macro- and micro-rheological parameters will be investigated, as well as vascular morphology, histology, and using 3D-scanned moldings of the vessels shunt and AVM flow simulation will be also applied to estimate flow velocity, vorticity, wall shear stress and Reynolds number values.
The results expectedly contribute to better understanding the pathophysiology of AV-shunts and AVMs and their effect on flow condition, and to optimization of the AV shunt operative techniques and to revealing better the nature of AVM.
