Description of the research topic:
The view that „institutions matter” in economic performance is based on a consensus among economists. Accordingly, the various lines of research within institutional economics center on the question of „how they matter”. This broad research question allows us to formulate specific theoretical and/or empirical questions concerning how the various political, legal, and regulatory institutions affect long-run economic performance (long-run income, productivity, innovativeness) of an economy. Besides the above-mentioned formal institutions, research into the impact of informal institutions (e.g. trust, culture, values) may be given special emphasis.
