Description of the research topic:

It is known from prior research and literature that biological systems change their redox potential due to the natural oxidation-reduction reactions. The energy source of the microbial growth is the biological oxidation which results in a reduction in the environment. This is because of the oxygen depletion and the production of reducing compounds in the nutrient medium. The typically decreasing redox potential shows specific kinetics depending on the microorganism and its metabolism.



Objectives: The main goal of the research is to obtain quantitative indices that describe the unique shape of redox potential curves of different microorganisms or microorganism groups. The redox potential curve is recorded over a time range, and its objective description needs well defined reference points and stable parameters. Numerous experiments has to be performed to collect sufficient amount of data for analysis. A knowledge base or database can be built on selected features to train recognition using statistical models.



Expected results: Stable reference points of redox potential curves are to be identified and appropriate mathematical method is to be provided to calculate their location. Quantitative indices are expected to be made using the redox potential curves. Multivariate mathematical models are to be developed for classification and recognition of microorganism based on kinetics of redox potential.
