Description of the research topic:

The major economics paradigms – although dissenting in important aspects – all posit that innovation activities are among the major determinants of economic performance, in particular competitiveness and growth. The operation and performance of a given national, regional or sectoral innovation system is of crucial importance. Detailed systematic comparative analyses of the Central European countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia) from these angles are lacking. A thesis can tackle this deficiency by addressing the following specific questions: A thesis can tackle this deficiency by addressing the following specific questions: 1) Theoretical underpinnings of innovation policies: What STI policy rationales and policy implications can be derived from the major economics paradigms? 2) To what extent the currently dominant metrics of innovation performance (in particular the European Innovation Scoreboard and the Global Innovation Index) are relevant to measure innovation performance and underpin STI policies? 3) What is the role of sectoral, regional, country-specific, and global factors in determining innovation activities and performance in these four countries?
