Description of the research topic:

Hazards exist throughout the world. When they occur and impact a vulnerable population, a disaster follows. To be prepared for disaster, or create resilience to a hazard, scientists and engineers try to predict the likelihood and magnitude of a hazard event (flood, earthquake etc.). To reduce the degree of damage an event may cause, engineers and planners try to design and build resilience into the built environment that may eventually be impacted by an event.
The main research goal is to develop a framework for evaluating risk to urban areas coming from multiple potential hazards. These hazards will have a wide variation in likelihood of occurrence and level of severity. Hungary is just such a place where there is a broad spectrum of hazards, with very different frequencies of occurrence and probable level of severity.
This research bridges the gap between hazard analysis and risk assessment of separate types of events (flood, earthquake etc.) as well as potential hazards by addressing the above mentioned concerns in order to find answers to the following questions: what type of hazards needs to be taken into account; what are elements at risk and how can their vulnerability be determined, what are the steps to determine risk taking into account the spatial component of every step; how is risk comparable obtained from different hazards with different level.
