Description of the research topic:
Research on the potential soil applicability and application of biochars produced by pyrolysis from organic wastes and by-products for soil amelioration has gained increasing interest during the last decade. However, the complex study of the biochar ageing-induced alterations – function of the environmental effects -, and characterisation of the consequences of these ageing processes and the prediction of their applicability based on these consequences has not been dealt with in such a complex form in the scientific literature, although the ageing induced changes clearly determine the long-term effects of the biochar and their „functioning” in soil.
The main objective of the PhD research is to study under various temporal and spatial conditions the ageing induced changes in the biochar properties in different environmental conditions and associated with this topic analysis and comparative evaluation of the short and long-term interactions in various biochar-soil systems both under artificial „in vitro” and natural „in vivo” ageing conditions in soils applying tiered experimental series. In addition, we develop a complex artificial ageing methodology the results of which will be compared with the results of ageing in the environment. Based on the results of the comparative study including a broad range of physical-chemical-biological-ecotoxicological monitoring methods we aim at predicting from the results of the artificial (“in vitro”) ageing the potential applicability, long-term sustainability in soil of a certain biochar.
