Abbreviation of location of studies: BME

Description of the research topic:

Microplastics are going to be one of the most important environmental concerns of the next years. Besides their removal from the environment it would serve the concept of the circular economy to decompose them to valuable raw materials ie. their monomer. Hydrothermal treatment, either in subcritical or supercritical conditions offers fast and efficient degradation of various materials including plastics. The treatment of microplastic containing water phases without the need to get rid of the water has obvious economical benefits. The goal of the research topic is to understand the decomposition kinetics depending on the plastic and on the conditions used using suitable top analytical techniques and benchmark high-pressure equipment. The Ph.D. fellow will participate in the development of both the chemical analysis and the pieces of equipment. Modeling based on the experimental data may lead to the design of a short contact time, continuous reactor for the treatment of microplastic containing waters.
