Description of the research topic:

Polymers are extensively applied materials in plenty of areas from engineering to biomedical applications since they possess various useful properties. They are generally selected according to their bulk properties for their specific uses. However, most polymer surfaces are chemically inert and difficult to join other materials, and thus surface modification is necessary before certain applications. Plasma treatment is attractive for this surface modification because it is an environmental-friendly process and highly reactive to the material surface to be treated while retaining the bulk properties of the material. During the Ph.D. project different cold plasma techniques are to be applied and its surface activation effects will be investigated by various methods (SEM, AFM, XPS, FTIR). After activation for further tailoring of selected properties by grafting macromolecules on the surface will be also studied.
