Description of the research topic:

Multifunctional nano-coatings have increasing importance in modern technologies. Considering the optical properties of coatings, improved light transmittance and water repellent properties can be joint requirements for outdoor applications. For such applications mesoporous, hybrid silica coatings can be good candidates. The advantage of these type of coatings from a preparative point of view is that the aforementioned properties can be developed in a single step. Moreover, the spontaneous return of hydrophobicity can be ensured after their damage. The main objective of developing coatings suitable for outdoor applications is to prepare systems with long-term stability of optical and wetting properties.

The task of the PhD student is to prepare multifunctional hybrid silica coatings on different solid substrates by adapting wet colloid chemical (e.g. sol-gel) methods from the literature. The composition of precursor sols and the conditions of film deposition and post-treatment methods will control the thickness, the porosity and surface properties of coatings. The optical properties will be characterized by thin film optical methods (UV-Vis spectroscopy, ellipsometry, scanning-angle reflectometry), the surface properties will be investigated by wetting measurements and by dye impregnation tests. The structure and morphology will be studied by a number of instrumental methods like ellipsometric porosimetry (EP), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) methods. The main purpose of this work from a scientific point of view is to reveal the relations of composition, structure and surface morphology to the optical and wetting properties of the coatings.
