Description of the research topic:

The three dimensional carborane clusters exhibit exceptional thermal and chemical stability, tailorability and unusually low toxicity, which provide performance superior to that of conventional materials. Nowadays they are widely investigated due to their optoelectronics properties. The bulky carborane cage can prevent intermolecular interactions, which are known to quench fluorescence through π-π interactions, furthermore their electronic properties are tunable, allowing to tailor the most suitable properties for a given application. It should be highlighted that in several cases when the -system is directly linked to the carbon atoms (Cc) of the o-carborane cage their fluorescence was quenched in solution and very interestingly, at the same time their emission can be recovered in aggregate (or solid) state. This unique behavior called aggregation-induced emission (AIE), which is the reverse of the aggregation-caused quenching. Until now the fluorophore was almost always linked to the carborane through the cage carbon atoms. Questions arise whether B-functionalized carboranes exhibit similar properties as their C-functionalized counterparts? Can we expect aggregation induced emission as well? While these B-functionalized compounds are of interest themselves as possible OLED, OFET etc. materials, the major advantage of them is the possibility of the further easy C-functionalization, enabling us to design new multifunctionalized materials.
