Description of the research topic:

Graphene oxide (GO), the most versatile graphene derivative is currently emerging as a multifunctional material. The research will focus on the response of this 2D nanomaterial when exposed to various external stimuli in aqueous environment. We concentrate on the nature and the consequences of the evolving interactions. The dynamics and the developing structures will be revealed from molecular to microscale by applying classical gas and liquid phase adsorption methods as well as cutting edge techniques including, solid state NMR, rheology, neutron and X-ray scattering methods (the latter two in international cooperation).
GOs in water may form a gel structure as a results of complex processes. The most important here is to reveal the structure and the dynamics of the gel including the conditions of the gel formation. The potential and the role of nanocarbons related to their interaction with proteins is not fully understood. Proteins of various size and chemistry will be used to answer questions like conditions of gel phase formation; main factors influencing the uptake and its mechanism; what is the shape and form of the protein on the GO surface or how the biological activity of the protein and the features of GO survive in these systems.
