Description of the research topic:

The fine chemical industry, particularly the pharmaceutical sector generates large amount of process wastewaters (PWWs) and used solvents. The principle of circular economy prescribe the treatment of these PWWs to increase the recycled fraction, which can be reused in the original or another technology.
The wastewater treatment is now increasingly being carried out with the application of physicochemical tools/methods. This is especially important in the case of any recyclable materials from process wastewaters. The halogen content of the wastewater also should be removed (AOX discharge). Under the research topic these opportunities are investigated on real chemical wastewaters. Possible physicochemical methods: distillation, rectification, evaporation, membrane filtration, pervaporation. The applicability of these methods are investigated and researched to find the best option for each process wastewater. Laboratory and pilot experiments are carried out with batch and continuous distillation columns. Professional flowsheet simulators (ChemCAD, Aspen Plus) and analytical devices (GC-MS, water titrator) are available for the research.
Hybrid separation techniques are also investigated in the aspects of dynamic modelling and control optimization, which are extractive heterogeneous azeotropic distillation (EHAD) and pervaporation combination with distillation.
