Description of the research topic:

Improving monitoring and decision support tools for the invasive alien maize pest western corn rootworm, Diabrotica v. virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Specific objectives:

a) Generalise temporal population dynamic patterns of Diabrotica v. virgifera under Hungarian conditions using the country wide monitoring data collected by Plant Protection Directorates across Hungary in the early 2000s, or through life history field trials (Ripka et al. 1999; Bayar et al. 2003; Zseller Hatala et al. 2006)(Toepfer and Kuhlmann 2006).

b) Correlating Diabrotica v. virgifera temporal population dynamic patterns of the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica v. virgifera, with environmental factors to develop regionally feasible and validated forecasting models for this important invasive maize pest, such as degree day models for larval hatch and adult emergence (Schaafsma et al. 1991; Levine et al. 1992; Godfrey et al. 1995; Wilstermann and Vidal 2013).

c) Relate trap captures of adult Diabrotica v. virgifera to absolute population densities of this pest in maize to allow the development of threshold models (Bazok et al. 2011; Kos et al 2014).
