Description of the research topic:

Knapped stone tool production is the oldest technology of the human kind dating back to 2.5 million years ago. It involves rocks composed of the most frequent mineral on Earth, quartz. Rocks made up of quartz are various and those of microcrystalline, cryptocrystalline and amorphous structure were preferred raw material due to fracture conchoidal way that is the result of the Hertzian cone fracture. The process and the results of the lithic technology, however, are affected by the petrographic properties of these siliceous rocks. The more homogenous and finer grained the rock, the more successful is the production. Because the lithic raw material sources of the environ of a Palaeolithic site offer various quality, it is possible to find correlation between rock properties and the execution of knapping which eventually reveals the effect of petrographic features on the technological know-how.
