Description of the research topic:

Among mint species peppermint and spearmint have bigger significance in the pharmacological – and food industry, as well as in cosmetics. Selection of mint species, to make new varieties, is carried out in several countries, also In Hungary. However, in the Hungarian National List of Varieties only two peppermint species can be found.
Aims of the study are the following: comparative evaluation of different mint clones cultivated in the Experimental Field of the Department of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants. Morphological evaluation: colour of the stems and the leaves, leaf shape, number of the essential oil bearing glands and their position on the leaf surface. Chemical evaluation: amount and composition of essential oil, total phenolic content, total antioxidant capacity, rosmarinic acid content, organoleptic characteristics. Since the allelopathic effect of mint species has already proven, the mint clones will be characterised from this point of view, too. Further aim is the determination of the quality changes of the dried leaves as well as the distilled essential oil during storage. For this purpose, quality changes will be described during 24 months of storage, by applying different circumstances.
