Description of the research topic:

Microbial hydrolases (eg. cellulases, lipases, proteases, chitinases) find promising applications in a wide range of industrial processes; however, development of biotechnological methods appropriate for environmental and food-industrial expectations requires identification of novel enzymes/producing isolates. These studies extend to characterization of producing parameters as well as biochemical properties of the new enzymes. Proper analysis of hydrolases involves high-yield fermentation and purification as well. In the course of this program, we analyze the hydrolase production of microorganisms (especially filamentous fungi) using plant-derived waste materials. Besides identification and characterization of new enzyme producing isolates/enzymes, we study the possibilities and biological requirements of the applicability of isolates, which have been found to have significant enzyme production and fermentation properties. This program also extends to preparatory studies for heterologous expression of microbial hydrolases.
