Description of the research topic:

Kynurenic acid (KYNA) is one of the neuroactive end-products of the kynurenine pathway (KP) of tryptophan (TRP) degradation in the mammalian brain. Its presence, changes in production, its potential neuroprotective and neuromodulatory effects in the central nervous system are not fully understood. Four isoforms of kynurenine aminotransferase (KAT) enzymes are responsible for the conversion of L-kynurenine to KYNA. The aim of our study is to map the localization of KAT isoforms in brain regions affected by various neurodegenerative diseases. These assays are performed in wild-type and mouse strains carrying zero mutation of isoenzymes.
