Description of the research topic:

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 is a value-added approach to reduce the atmospheric emission of carbon-dioxide and to simultaneously form valuable, high energy density raw chemicals. To achieve industrially relevant reaction rates (current density), continuous-flow electrolyzers must be applied. In these setups the cathode catalyst is immobilized on porous layers, forming gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs), through which carbon-dioxide is directly fed to the catalyst in gas phase. During the project we will study the combined effect of the catalyst particle size and morphology, the ionomer content of the GDE, and the chemical nature and ratio of the catalyst support on the electrochemical properties of the gas diffusion electrodes. Systematically investigating the effect of the GDE (and the catalyst) structure, we aim to reveal structure-property relationships, based on which the reaction conditions can be better optimized to achieve industrially relevant current densities.
