Description of the research topic:

The electromagnetic eigenfrequencies of the Earth-ionosphere cavity resonator is called Schumann resonances (SR). The main (inner) excitation source of the cavity is the global lightning activity. Electromagnetic waves with frequencies of some ten Hz radiated from lightning discharges can more times propagate around the globe due to their small attenuation. Resonant peaks elevate from the background spectrum at ~ 8 Hz, ~ 14 Hz, ~20 Hz, ~ 26 Hz… as a consequence of the constructive interference of the propagating waves.
The global lightning activity and its distribution can be determined by using inversion based on data of multiple SR stations in quasi-real time which is important from the point of view of climate research. Preparing such an inversion technique already started at the Research Centre of the Astronomy and Earth Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Geodetic and Geophysical Institute, in Sopron. One of the tasks for the PhD student is to improve the inversion procedure and to analyze the results.
A very new finding that SR may have outer excitation source arising in the Earth’s magnetosphere. The other task for the PhD student is to disclose the possible influence of this outer source on SR measurements which is crucial for the reliability of the inversion results as well as it can contribute to the deeper insight of the magnetospheric processes (space weather).
SR data necessary for the research work and international co-operations are available for the PhD student.
