Description of the research topic:

Membrane separation techniques are now being used successfully in several fields of water and wastewater treatments. Despite the developments of the past decades, the fouling of membrane pores is still a general problem of membranes, as it leads to the reduction of the flux, therefore it involves the necessity of cleaning or replacing the membranes. A novel trend of researches is the development of nanotechnology-based "anti-fouling", superhydrophilic membranes, that are achieved by nanoparticle covering or their embedding into the surface. Another novel approach is the utilization of photocatalytically active semiconductor nanoparticles, which can provide the ability to decompose the organic membrane foulants by irradiation, that has sufficiently high energy. The directions of the enhancements include the development of photocatalytic activity (i.e., by reducing the recombination rate of the charge carriers via the development of composites containing conductive nanoparticles), and increasing the visible light driven excitability to form membrane surfaces that can be effectively regenerated with natural solar irradiation
