Description of the research topic:

99% of the operating companies are SMEs in Hungary. They contribute significantly to Hungary’s ‘non-financial business economy’. They generate 53.7 % of value added, slightly lower than the EU average of 56.8 %. Employment by SMEs accounts for 68.8 % of total employment, slightly above the EU average of 66.4 % (EC, 2018). Hungary performs below the EU average in internationalisation. Based on some researches the ratio of SMEs with export activity is 22.5-46.7% in Hungary. The aim of the research is to map the factors influencing the internationalisation of SMEs (after defining the scope of companies to be studied /regional and/or sectoral/), their motivations, incentives, barriers, as well as the opportunities and partners enhancing internationalisation together with their level of utilisation and effectiveness by using qualitative and quantitative research methods. The research can focus on the internationalisation of SMEs in any other country, as well.
