Description of the research topic:

The urban transportation network is regarded as the backbone of urban activities. The urban area transportation network is typically designed to cater to the transportation activities of urban people, with the diversified land-use activities along with the population increase, the transportation system required to be revised or realigned. Any gap in the rising transportation demand and network volume leads to the traffic jam, hence prompting environmental degradation and a considerable loss in the economics and safety issues.
The inability to understand the factors causing problems and inadequate proper planning to mend the circumstance is the main reason for such urban dilapidation.
One of the core research questions of the proposed thesis is whether the currently used point estimates (i.e. averages) of the value of time and other user cost parameters can be replaced with a more dynamic approach that allows for heterogeneity in the way how travellers evaluate time loss and other sources of inconvenience. In order to manage the circumstance, it is vital to make sure the proper usage of all available resources and develop infrastructure through the ideal use of assets. Regarding planning purposes, it is important to get quantitative visualization of the planning results and policy development for evaluation among the alternate thoughts.
As a planning tool, digital technologies can play a massive role in the transportation sector. The new innovations related to the Internet of Things (IoT) and Intelligent Transport System (ITS) offers many advantages to promote traffic system in term of travel time, shortest path and traffic safety. It is highly recommended that vehicles and the infrastructures should be equipped with the C-ITS. In this way, drivers will have the necessary information regarding the road and traffic status, and it provides alternatives for the drivers to take actions to avoid the harm. In addition to that, new technologies offer much urban accessibility information for the public, it shows the available opportunities related to a different mode of transportation to the intended destinations and also the direction and distances to various activities in any urban area, that enhances the accessibility which is the main focus of the research.
By utilizing the new technology and exploit ITS, it can be ensured to have fewer traffic jams and fewer safety issues. Consequently, it will lead to an increase in the livability of the cities.
