Description of the research topic:

Nociceptive signals produced upon peripheral tissue damage or inflammation can ead to chronic pain. It is now known that glial cells have important role in the maintenance of chronic pain, but many aspects of neuron-glia interactions are nor clarified. Glial cells activated upon neuronal signals release substances (e.g. pro-infalmmatory cytokines) which in turn, modulate neuronal excitability.
The aim of our experiments is to investigate the cytokine production of spinal astrocytes upon different stimuli and the possible role of the secreted cytokines in the maintenance of chronic pain.
