Description of the research topic:

In spite of decreasing tendency in the mortality of bacterial and viral infections, these infections have significant impact on immunocompromised hosts because of the increasing number of these patients. The number of hepatitis E viral infections is increasing from year to year, this can cause significant problem in developing countries and developed countries as well. Because of the emergence of chronic HEV infections mainly in immunocompromised patients, we have to focus on the laboratory diagnostics and screening the presence of viraemia in blood donors. The sensitivity of diagnostic tests is quite wide thus it is difficult to determine the real prevalence of HEV infections, circulating genotypes, and source of infection in Hungary.
Due to intensive research, more and more data are available about bacterial infections in cystic fibrosis patients, while we can not find enough data about the newly recognized respiratory viral infections.
Our aims to study the characteristics of viral and bacterial respiratory infections in cystic fibrosis patients; and prevalence of hepatitis E viral infections, its epidemiological features and molecular characterization of virus strains. Data about pathogenesis, epidemiology of various infectious diseases may contribute to the developments in the laboratory diagnosis and treatment of infections.
