Description of the research topic:

Antibiotic resistance is an uprising threat among pathogenic bacteria unfortunately due to the heavy and imprudent use of antibiotics. This also jeopardizes the use of the otherwise very useful drugs that made infectious diseases treatable in the 20th century. Even it is not unusual that multidrug-resistant bacteria emerge. Among them the groups of the most dangerous bacteria are resistant to extended-spectrum β-lactams and carbapenems just to mention some. A special group of pathogens are the strict anaerobes which are useful members of the human normal microbiota but also opportunistic pathogens that in many cases are life-threatening and may also be resistant to important antibiotics such as carbapenems and the anti-anaerobe 5-nitroimidazoles. Therefore investigation of the resistance mechanisms against these antibiotics is an important task and may help to restrict their spread and elaborate effective therapies.
