Description of the research topic:

Mucolytics are commonly used drugs in viral and bacterial respiratory diseases. Their function is to dissolve the respiratory secretion and to prevent retention. Their direct antimicrobial role has not yet been studied. In our experiments, first we would like to study the antibacterial, in particularly, anti-chlamydial and antiviral effects of mucolytics using human, airborne tissue culture. If the drugs are influencing the growth of the pathogens, we want to get an answer on how this is achieved; inhibiting or enhancing the entry of the pathogens into the host cell or possibly inducing the production of molecules within the cell which have an effect on the growth of the pathogen. In possession of in vitro results, we would like to further investigate the effect of mucolytics on infected mouse models as well.
