Description of the research topic:
During the Early Cretaceous, the Mecsek Mts. was situated along a continental rift-system which contained numerous different sedimentary and magmatic formations such as the Mecsek-type atoll-structure, slope, platform or basinal formations. The most characteristic feature of the Early Cretaceous is the volcanic activity. We know almost nothing about the effects of the volcanism (degassing of toxic gases, seawater acidity, anoxia) on the marine ecosystem. This topic would like to unravel the connection of the Early Cretaceous volcanic activity and marine ecosystem with sedimentological, paleontological and chemostratigraphical investigations.
