Description of the research topic:

Marginalization has been re-interpreted as a socio-spatial process in rural geography recently. In the proposed PhD research, marginalization might be interpreted as lagging behind ‘core’ regions in terms of key social and economic indicators (employment, consumption, political activity, etc.), and/or as no access to resources (credit, public services, etc.), and/or deep economic or political dependencies, and/or being part of local processes labelled ‘informal’. The research topic might be focused on any of the following issues: understating the relational nature of local and macro-processes re/producing marginality; the strategies and practices of firms in marginalized spaces; individual or household survival strategies; the changing role of the local state and it relations to the central state and to local agents. The methodology might rest on case study and/or comparative approach, and the combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques.
