Description of the research topic:
The Bronze Age of the Carpathian Basin signals a turning point in European prehistory, significant changes can be observed from both an archaeological and anthropological point of view. Characteristic demographic features of the region’s Bronze Age are the significant increase of population, and related migration between local and remote areas. Great cemeteries of the Southern Hungarian Plain provide an opportunity to learn more about contemporary societies. This include both more accurate biological reconstruction (palaeodemography, metric analyses, palaeopathology) and more precise mapping of the past societies’ internal hierarchies and customs.
Recent research topic focuses on classical physical anthropological analyses on Bronze Age osteoarchaeological materials from the Southern Great Hungarian Plain, where different funeral practices (inhumation and cremation) were common. The project’s main goal is to analyze new cemeteries. On the other hand, previously examined human remains will be also involved where utilization of new diagnostic criteria will allow us to reconstruct these societies in a more precise way.
