Description of the research topic:
In the midst of the current ecological crisis, humanity needs to develop solutions that simultaneously maintain human well-being along with the preservation of natural processes, using effective, nature-based solutions.
The unprecedented habitat fragmentation in human history causes isolation of plant and animal populations, accelerated decline of population sizes and ultimately, local extinctions. The global dimensions of isolation has raised the need to develop predictive ecological models able to forecast the associated risks faced by different populations. Estimating the long-term persistence of plant populations in isolated habitats is key to understanding the functioning of ecological systems and the continued provision of ecosystem services.
The PhD student will investigate the performance and long-term persistence of plant populations in isolated ecological islands of the Carpathian Basin.
