Description of the research topic:

Due to the responsible management of energy resources, sustainable waste management and the reduction of harmful emissions, processes based on waste and by-products are becoming increasing importance. The non-food wastes and by-products (e.g. biomass) have great importance in complying with the EU directives set for 2050. These materials can be used for production of derivates have a great importance for the sustainability. In most cases, catalysts are used in the processes to improve not only the yield of the products but also their composition and purity. However, in many cases, further catalytic transformations are required due to the poor quality of the primary products. The proper separation of primary products and their value-added transformation into high value fractions is one of the biggest problems in new generation biorefineries. Zeolite-type catalysts are widely used in the hydrocarbon sector and organic chemical industry. After appropriate modification, they have favourable properties (pore structure, acidity, surface characteristics, etc.) in “green” chemical processes; e.g. catalytic conversion of organic acids, alcohols, polysaccharides. On the other hand, the development of catalysts with appropriate structure and composition, or even the optimization in operating parameters is a key issue for the development of economical processes.
The main aim of the PhD topic is the preparation, modification and optimization of zeolite-type catalysts for biorefineries purposes in order to obtain value-added products, taking into account the sustainability. The main areas are the following: increase of the product value obtained by catalytic processes of waste fractions, the production of green solvents and compounds.
