Research of net zero energy and carbon neutral buildings

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: Budapest University of Technology and Economics
mechanical engineering
Géza Pattantyús-Ábrahám Doctoral School of Mechanical Engineering

Thesis supervisor: Tamás Csoknyai
Location of studies (in Hungarian): Building Services and Process Engineering
Abbreviation of location of studies: EPGET

Description of the research topic:

a.) Antedecents:
The EU aims to be climate-neutral by 2050 – an economy with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. This objective is at the heart of the European Green Deal and in line with the EU’s commitment to global climate action under the Paris Agreement. The transition to a climate-neutral society is both an urgent challenge and an opportunity to build a better future for all. Building sector plays a major role to meet the challenge.
b.) Aim of research:
Nearly zero energy buildings will be spread over in the near future, but the net zero level poses a significant technical and economic challenge. The topic has not been sufficiently researched, especially with regard to the impact of domestic meteorological, building use and energy features. In addition to energy efficiency, renewable energy produced locally, nearby or distant, waste heat utilization and smart technologies also play a key role. It is not enough to examine individual buildings, but the interaction of buildings in urban context is also essential. The aim of this work is to investigate these issues.
c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time:
- Literature review: literature, case studies on near-zero and carbon neutral buildings, cities, power supply and smart grids. (1 year)
- Data collection: collection of data related to national characteristics (eg. meteorological data, user habits, smart meter monitoring data). (1 year)
- Monitoring data processing. (2nd year)
- Building level simulation tests, parameter analysis. (2 years)
- In urban fabric, building interaction studies, settlement-level assessment. (3 years)
- Elaboration of dissertation (4th year)

d.) Required equipment:
The work relies significantly on dynamic simulation, the necessary software is available, and the toolbar can be expanded with additional software. It may also be useful to carry out on-site measurements, the expected instrumentation of which is assured by the department's current equipment or industrial network and does not represent a significant financial burden.

e.) Expected scientific results:
During the research we analyze different types of buildings, energy supply options, search for optimal solutions and point to technical limitations with quantitative results.
