Ion acceleration from laser plasmas generated on thin foils

Description of the research topic:

In case of illuminating thin foils with high intensity laser radiation electrons are set free and accelerated. The generated electric sheath accelerates ions to several MeV energies. According to simulations this effect can be strong for UV lasers. The energy of the accelerated ions will be measured for (10^18 – 10^19 W/cm^2) KrF laser intensities (248 nm wavelength, 500 fs pulse duration), seeking answer, whether this laser is applicable for the mechanism and whether KrF lasers can be used even for proton therapy. Parallel investigation of plasma properties by x-ray spectroscopy will be carried out, too.

Skills for Labview and Matlab programming is advantageous.
