Description of the research topic:

The regulatory systems of eukaryotic gene expression can be grouped into two major categories; quantity and quality control systems. Quantity control systems regulate which genes are expressed, while quality control mechanisms ensure that only the perfect gene products are accumulated in the cells. As eukaryotic gene expression is fairly complicated, many different faulty products can be generated. Thus several quality control systems operate at RNA or protein level in eukaryotic cells. In addition to preventing the accumulation of aberrant gene products, quality control systems are involved in the defense against molecular parasites such as viruses and transposons and they play a critical role in the fine tuning of several normal genes. Although the quality control systems are intensively studied in yeast, animals and humans, little is known about the operation of the different quality control systems in plants.
During our program we want study the connections of different RNA and protein quality control systems and aim to analyze the role of quality control mechanisms in plant photoregulation.
