Description of the research topic:

In order to control the losses of porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus (PRRSV), a national PRRS elimination programme was launched in 2014. In the course of the programme, several farms chose eradication based on the use of vaccination. We would like to facilitate this process by the development of farm-specific PCR systems that can discriminate the applied vaccine and the wild type PRRSV strains fast and efficiently. In addition, we study genetic changes of the wild type PRRSV after vaccination pressure by sequencing short regions (ORF5, ORF7), or full-length genome. The obtained results provide invaluable information for updating of the discriminatory PCR systems, as well as to the better understanding of evolutionary mechanisms of the highly variable PRRS virus.
