Description of the research topic:

The presence of different artificial chemicals in our environment enhances the ability of microorganisms to develop antibiotic resistance, which is considered by the World Health Organization as one of the most urgent health threat to be solved. This PhD work aims to develop functionalized metasurfaces sensors, which can allow rapid and simultaneous detection of antibiotics in fluids. Functional metasurfaces will be designed which consists of an array of plasmonic nanoantennas and a chemically active layer. The antibiotics, which needs to be detected can adhere or diffuse to the chemically active layer. The metasurface enhances the strength of the optical signal variation (e.g. a frequency shift of the nanoantenna absorption peak), which is generated when a small amount of chemical adheres to, or diffuses in the chemically active surface.
