Description of the research topic:

The worldwide market for prebiotic oligosaccharides, such as e.g., galacto-, fructo-, and xylo-oligosaccharides, is steadily growing. The majority of these compounds are produced in the biotechnological route, generally in batch fashion. The industrial-scale production typically involves complex, multi-step processes, including a biotransformation step followed by a sequence of downstream unit operations. In recent years, several attempts have been made by both academic researchers and industrial investigators to develop alternative processing methods and purification technologies that may replace certain current processing steps or could successfully be integrated into existing manufacturing practices. The proposed PhD research aims at analyzing and optimizing complex, large-scale manufacturing processes. The proposed work includes research activities like comparing various process scenarios, performing cost and throughput analysis, debottlenecking, and environmental impact assessment using computer-aided process design tools.
