Description of the research topic:

Aging of the vasculature plays a central role in morbidity and mortality of older people. Our goal is develop novel interventions to prevent/delay age-related vascular pathologies by targeting fundamental cellular and molecular aging processes. The pathophysiological roles of oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired resistance to molecular stressors, chronic low-grade inflammation, genomic instability, cellular senescence, epigenetic alterations and deregulated nutrient sensing in the vascular system and their contribution to the pathogenesis of both micro- and macrovascular diseases associated with old age will be investigated using cutting edge methods of molecular biology, vascular physiology, imaging and biochemistry.
The research will be conducted as part of the ongoing collaboration between the Translational Vascular Cognitive Impairment Program of the University of Szeged and the Vascular Cognitive Impairment and Neurodegeneration Program of the Reynolds Oklahoma Center on Aging/Oklahoma Center for Geroscience (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma, USA).
