Description of the research topic:
Pain is one of the most frequent causes of patient visits at medical services. However, knowledge on pain mechanisms and management is still limited. Therefore, the present project is aimed at the study of pain-transmitting (nociceptive) primary sensory neurons (NPSNs) which play a pivotal role in the transmission of painful stimuli under physiological and pathological conditions. Neuroplastic morphological, neurochemical and molecular changes of NPSNs will be examined in in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro pain models. Special emphasis will be laid on the role of the archetypal nociceptive ion channel transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (capsaicin) receptor expressed in NPSNs.
