Description of the research topic:

Structures are usually designed with the aid of the response spectrum analysis which is applicable for both elastic and elastic-plastic structures. There are, however, structures which are rocking and impacting and hence the classical design methods are not applicable. These are for example blocks, bridge abutments, columns and arches consisting of rigid blocks. The latter ones may be parts of historical buildings and churches. In the photos of many churches which survived severe earthquakes it can be observed that there were considerable motions during the earthquake events, hence the traditional static analysis is not applicable. In modern earthquake resistant design sometimes rocking shear walls are applied, which are designed on the basis of the response spectrum analysis, although, due to impacting during motions this method is unrealistic. In many cases rocking mechanisms are influenced by the soil-structure interaction, which may complicate the behaviour considerably. The goal is to develop reliable design methods for rocking mechanisms.
