Description of the research topic:
Exploitation possibilities of eukaryotic green algae are numerous from biofules through food products to pharma products. All algae live in ecosystems and are engaged in weaker or stronger interactions with other representatives of the communities. The significance of these interactions are clearly shown in a few cases (e.g. symbiotic mycorrhiza), however, the surface has only been scratched, much work has to be done in order to get a deeper understanding of these complex ecosystems. This proposal aims the discovery of the potential of algal-bacterial-fungal interactions, the specific alga features exhibited exclisively in associations. Interactions between eukaryotic green algae and their natural and/or engineered bacterial and fungal partners will be investigated and interrogated at genome and transcriptome levels, novel adaptive functions will be screened for future applications in medicine and agriculture.
