Description of the research topic:

In the agro-food, (bio-)pharma and chemical industry, both enzymatic biotransformations and membrane separation techniques are widely utilized. Enzyme membrane reactor (EMR) technology couples an enzymatic reaction with membrane separation. It promises an innovative solution for process intensification by enabling enzyme re-use and enhancing overall productivity.

Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) alongside xylooligosaccharides (XOS) and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are some of the well-established carbohydrates with prebiotic attributes. The market for oligosaccharides (OS) is already substantial, and grows rapidly.

This study investigates the performance of EMRs that enable both the biotransformation and the recovery of biocatalysts in a single-step. The focus of this work is on the construction and design of biocatalytic membrane reactors, and particularly, reactors utilizing free enzymes. This study investigates the major governing process and reaction parameters of such systems, identifies critical conditions and process limitations, and evaluates applicability of this technology for the continuous production of value-added saccharides.
