INVESTIGATING THE ROLE OF SIGMA-1 RECEPTOR IN PATHOLOGICAL PROCESSES

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Abbreviation of location of studies: PATPH

Description of the research topic:

Alterations in the activity of sigma-1 receptor have been observed in cerebrovascular, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative disorders. This receptor plays an important part in the regulation of intracellular calcium ion level, and phospholipid transport. Platelets, which are capable of the de novo synthesis of eicosanoids, are the regulators of microcirculation, haemostasis, and immunological processes. Our research field includes the examination of the effect of sigma-1 receptor on the function of platelets (aggragation, synthesis of eicosanoids) and vessels (contractility, synthesis of eicosanoids) and its role in the pathomechanism of certain conditions (alcoholism, epilepsy, cerebral edema, and cerebral hypoxy), with the application of sigma-1 receptor agonist and antagonist. Hopefully, our experiments on animals will create an opportunity for us to investigate the platelet function in healthy and unhealthy human populations, which would facilitate the evaluation of the efficiency of therapeutic interventions as well.
