Description of the research topic:

Syllabus
Development of optimization methods / software for complex engineering systems. Integration of engineering software in a general, multipurpose optimization system (optimization of products and production processes). Since the available computational capacity today makes it possible to get the parameters of the investigated system for large amount of different inputs (using specific engineering software) we can find the optimum design, manufacturing, or maintenance parameters for the technical system using appropriate optimization techniques. Machine learning methods (e.g. neural networks, support vector machines) are effective in wide range of engineering optimization problems.
Theoretical background: Problem formulation, identification of design variables, optimization criteria and constraints. Systematic consideration of alternatives, while satisfying resource and cost constraints. Finding appropriate cost function. Classic and non-traditional optimization algorithms. Sensitivity analysis, task size reduction. Robust design. Verification by experiments.
