Description of the research topic:

Cytostatic agents, besides their chemotherapeutic effects, may induce degenerative changes in peripheral and central neurons. Knowledge on the late morphological and functional consequences of the administration of these antitumor compounds is limited. This project is aimed at the study of the effects of cytostatic agents on domains of primary sensory neurons by using functional and quantitative morphological methods. Special emphasis will be laid on the examination of the neurodegenerative effects of these agents on sensory ganglion cells and their primary afferent terminations in the spinal dorsal horn.
