Description of the research topic:

Vineyards are mostly cultivated in dry land farming, despite the fact that shorter or longer drought periods occure. Grapevine response to water limitation is complex and involves many physiological mechanisms. Even if the vineyard irrigated to prepare for the future viticulture should adapt by limited water use. Viticulture is based on grape rootstocks grafted on scion , production varieties since the grape phylloxera epidemics. Our program focuses on drought tolerant grape rootstock breeding. Despite the fact that large number of paper reported variability of rootstock response to water deficit there are still lack of knowledge the phisiological mechanisms. Hydraulic and chemical signalling plays important role of water regulation in plants. There is strong evidence that Absisic acid (ABA) plays an important role in the regulation of stomatal behaviour. ABA can be produced in leaf and root as well. Other hormones or hormon like compounds also interact in this physiological process. Our aim would be to study the chemical signalling pathway, mainly ABA signalling of grape graft. Plant sap will be extracted from different plant organs in different phenological stages during the vegetation period of different rootstock-scion combinations. ABA concentration in plant sap will be determined and all environmental impact will be considered. We are moving towards a more complete understanding of the whole-grape graft ABA signalling process and an understanding of why the intensity of chemical signalling and the response to these signals may vary between environments and grafting combinations.
