Description of the research topic:

Effects of vitamin D in the pathomechanism of infectious diseases

Chlamydiae are intracellular pathogens with a special life cycle. The most important human pathogenic species are Chlamydia trachomatis and Chlamydia pneumoniae. Nowadays vitamin D is one of the most recommended vitamins by the physicians. It has many indications; e.g. osteoporosis, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, etc. The impact of vitamin D on infections, especially on chlamydia infections is less investigated. In this topic, the effect of vitamin D in cell cultures infected with different types of chlamydia will be investigated to find out how it affects host cell gene expression and how it affects the replication of chlamydiae. Having the results of in vitro experiments the effect of vitamin D can be further investigated in chlamydia-infected mice to clarify how the treatment influences the outcomes of the infection and the immune response to infection.
