THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: Budapest University of Technology and Economics
mechanical engineering
Géza Pattantyús-Ábrahám Doctoral School of Mechanical Engineering

Thesis supervisor: István Németh
Location of studies (in Hungarian): Manufacturing Science and Engineering
Abbreviation of location of studies: GTT

Description of the research topic:

a.) Antecedents:
At the Department of Manufacturing Science and Engineering the topic of maintenance planning of manufacturing systems has been addressed in the framework of earlier international research projects. A currently running international research project aims to develop a decision support system to determine the optimal maintenance strategies, policies and schedules.

b.) Aim of research:
Development of new methods and algorithms for the maintenance planning of manufacturing equipment (machine tools, robots, material handling equipment) and manufacturing systems.

c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time:
• Literature study on statistical methods, data gathering and mining methods, maintenance strategies, reliability and maintainability modelling methods, analytical and simulation-based maintenance planning methods, life cycle cost models, degradation models with special focus on modelling the load levels, machine learning based degradation prediction methods. (0.5 year)
• Definition of key performance indicators relating the degradation process, historical load levels, reliability and maintainability parameters. (0.5 year)
• Development of new methods to predict the future characteristic values of the key performance indicators. (1 year)
• Coding the methods into computer programs. (1 year)
• Comparison of the news methods with the surveyed old methods. (1 year)
• Composing publications as well as the dissertation. (0.5 year)

d.) Required equipment:
All the necessary software tools and information technology equipment are available at the Department of Manufacturing Science and Engineering.

e.) Expected scientific results:
New methods and algorithms for the maintenance planning of manufacturing systems.
