Description of the research topic:

Transposable elements (TEs) are DNA segments that can move from one locus to the other within a genome. They are usually considered molecular parasites, but can, in certain cases provide benefits to their hosts. Their spontaneous transpositions provide a significant contribution to the mutation rate of bacteria, understanding the mechanisms that control this process is therefore of utmost importance. The projected work will uncover novel interactions predicted to exist among various regulatory factors using up-to-date molecular biology techniques. In addition, TEs are commonly applied as molecular tools to engineer the genomes of a wide range of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. The newly acquired knowledge on the controlled mobilization of TEs will be applied to develop novel genetic tools for bacterial genome editing. The utility of these tools will be demonstrated in metabolic engineering projects aiming to produce added-value compounds in Escherichia coli cells.
